Dr. Beth Braboy
Dr. Braboy joined the Montreat College faculty in 1998 and was responsible for creating and implementing the Elementary Education program at the college. She has been hard at work in that program since. According to her philosophy of education, "Teaching begins with a heart for service, an opening to the needs around you… to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8)."
When it comes to life in the classroom, Dr. Braboy says, "We in the Montreat College teacher education program place caring for our students through grace, love, and compassion as the major priority. We at Montreat do not care from a distance. For us, the caring is up close and personal, minute by minute, day by day. Placing caring at the core of each day challenges us to great courage and great love. Love can be lived and expressed in a multitude of ways. It is often the most lasting legacy a teacher can share, and it is the greatest gift a student receives."
When she isn't lecturing or working with students in the classroom, Dr. Braboy enjoys going to the beach, playing music, reading and gardening. She has extended family in nearby Kentucky and Virginia, and her church family at Montreat Presbyterian Church is near and dear to her.
She holds an undergraduate degree in Music, as well as a M.A. and doctorate in Elementary Education Curriculum and Instruction Design.
Mr. Tony C. Horning
Mr. Horning is an Assistant Professor of Education at Montreat College. He teaches Education courses in the traditional undergraduate programs on the Montreat campus and the ED 505 course in the School of Professional Adult Studies on the Asheville and Charlotte campuses. He has been at the college since 2006. He and his wife Jane have two children, Jacob and Elizabeth.
In the classroom, Mr. Horning's teaching style is highly Socratic. He strives to understand the "Why?" behind all of his students' opinions and answers.
When asked why he cares so deeply about teaching and education, he says, "I care about people who strive to grow and improve themselves, especially when there are forces at play which continuously work against those people."
His life verse is Galatians 2:20:
"I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
Mr. Horning holds a B.A. in Elementary Education and a MAEd in Administration and Supervision.
Dr. Constance Nihart
Dr. Nihart joined the Montreat College faculty in 2004. For her, education is more than academics. She says, "It is who we become. One learns through living and experiencing life. If people are called to teach, then they become one of the most powerful influences in the world."
When she describes her teaching style, she says, "In my classroom, learning is in real time. My students and I get out in the classrooms and schools and walk in the trenches. We discuss the way education should be, and then see how it really is. Learning in my classroom is eye-opening and extremely fun."
Dr. Nihart's is passionate about many things. Outside of the classroom, she really enjoys going to church, running, hiking, biking, singing, BIG hugs, and loving her family. Her family is very close to her heart, wherever she is. She says, "My husband is the best in the world. Not only is he gorgeous, but he loves God, me, and our children. I have three of the most loving, energetic, and beautiful children. I also have two older brothers, and two best friends whom I claim as my sisters."
Dr. Nihart holds a B.A. and M.A. in Elementary Education. Her doctorate is in Education with a focus on Educational Leadership. |
