Cavalier Baseball edges out Southern Wesleyan, 5-4
It was a battle of regionally ranked opponents on Wednesday as Southern Wesleyan and Montreat College played nine innings of tightly contested baseball. In the back and forth match, timely hitting would be the factor as Montreat scored in the fourth, fifth and the sixth to hold onto the 5-4 decision. Junior Johnathon Madera pitched effectively into the fifth and left the mound with the 5-2 lead. Brian Greene and John Shannon would finish the job as Shannon recorded his second save in as many days. Jesse Wise would have two hits and an RBI for the Cavaliers. Steven Hoyle and Chris Allen would also add RBI’s as well.
The Cavaliers are now 24-8 overall and sit just one game out of first place in the tough AAC standings. They have recently garnered national attention by earning the #25 national ranking, according to the NAIA's latest polls. This is the first time since 2004 that the Cavalier baseball team has broken into the national rankings. In 2004, Montreat was ranked as high as 12th, its highest ranking ever.
The Cavaliers take on Lenior Rhyne at home today; the first pitch is scheduled for 2:00pm.
