Cavaliers split with Bulldogs and land one game out of first place in the AAC

Game 1 - Tennessee Wesleyan 12 Montreat 1. Two of the top teams in the AAC met in a battle for the top spot early in the young season as Montreat College faced off against conference rival Tennessee Wesleyan. The Bulldogs from Tennessee Wesleyan came into the game riding a 22 game conference winning streak. In game one, Montreat starter Patrick Ballew pitched effectively but got little support. The Cavaliers committed three costly errors that would lead to six unearned runs and that would be enough to propel the Bulldogs to their 23rd consecutive conference victory.

Leading the way at the plate for the Cavaliers was Junior Chad Dawkins with two hits and Adam Speas, who reached base three times with two walks and a HBP.

Game 2 - Montreat College 7 Tennessee Wesleyan 5

In game two of the doubleheader Montreat left hander Garrett Jones took the mound looking to snap the Bulldog win streak. He would prove to be the difference keeping the Bulldogs off balance all day. Jones would strike out five and only surrender six hits and three earned runs. He was relieved by junior right hander John Shannon, who would come in with the bases loaded and two outs. Shannon would induce a one pitch at bat with a ground ball to second. Shannon recorded his first save on the season and secured the fourth win of the season for Jones. Offensively, the Cavaliers hit the ball hard all day and took advantage of eight walks by the Bulldog pitchers. Brent Ashbaugh had a great game in the leadoff position collecting two walks and an RBI single in the fifth. Justin Cockrell had his best game as a Cavalier with three hits and two RBI. Cameron Duckworth would come into the game off the bench with two key hits to help lead the Cavaliers to victory. Montreat College now stands at 23-8 and 6-2 in Conference one game out of first place.
