Cavalier Baseball collects two great wins in Florida

(Babson Park, FL) - Stellar pitching and the long ball propelled Montreat to two great road wins and took the Cavaliers to a 15-6 overall record. Earlier this week, Montreat split its first conference doubleheader against the Buffaloes of Milligan College. Montreat took game one against Milligan 8-5, but dropped a one run loss to the Buffs in game two of the series, 5-6. Yesterday however, playing in the Sunshine State, Montreat demonstrated great control on the mound as Brian Green (So., Shelby, NC) pitched five shutout innings in route to earning the win over the Pilots of Bethel College, 12-4.

Senior Dane Phillips (Charlotte, NC) had a great day at the plate going 3-for-5 with two homeruns.  Jesse Wise (Sr., Benson, NC) tallied three RBI’s after going 4-for-5 against Bethel.

Montreat’s second win came against Walsh College (Ohio), 8-4.  The win came by a heroic come-from-behind sixth inning, as Adam Speas (So., Rural Hall, NC) hit a two run homer in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at four runs apiece.  Speas’ homer triggered the Cavaliers’ bats as they went on to score four more runs, three of which came off of a Chad Dawkins' (Jr., Rockingham, NC) double.  Speas went 1-for-3, while Dawkins recorded two hits with three RBI’s.

Garrett Jones (Jr., Elwood, IN) recorded the victory by pitching four shutout innings with four strikeouts.

Montreat continues its Florida road trip as they take on Salem State (Mass.) in Clearwater, FL on Thursday, March 6th, 2008.
