Brittnye Scott's three goals against Bryan College earned her the NAIA Region XII Player of the Week for women's soccer in the offensive category. Scott managed to spoil Bryan's homecoming game with her hat trick that propelled Montreat to a 4-0 victory. "This is a great honor for Brittnye and the Montreat women's soccer team," said Head Coach Dan Woerner, "the great thing about the Bryan game was that it was a whole team effort. Everyone played their part very well. I think Bryan put a lot of attention on Amanda Solesbee, and overlooked Brittnye's potential. That's the great thing about having two great scorers, if one is covered, the other may be more open and they both have the talent to attack."

The varsity soccer teams at Montreat College welcomed 50 children from the Asheville Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club to a soccer clinic Thursday afternoon. The children, ages six to thirteen, spent an hour meeting the players, practicing simple drills, and playing at the soccer field on Montreat’s Black Mountain campus.
Brian Guengerich, Unit Director for the Salvation Army’s Boys and Girls Club, organized the clinic with Montreat College’s Athletic Director, Jonathan Bennett. Guengerich hoped to give the kids an experience they normally wouldn’t have. “Letting people know we are here and really interacting with the community are big factors when we plan events for our kids. Ninety percent of our kids really don’t know what it’s like to experience getting together with a group of friends in a setting like this.

For the first time in school history, Montreat College is ranked #1 in their Region (NAIA Region XII) and in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Nationally, Montreat is ranked #32, though last week’s win against King College should move them closer to the top 25 in tomorrow’s national poll.
According to Assistant Coach Josh Riccardi, “We’re in the driver’s seat. It’s a comforting thought to know that if we win out, we win conference. That puts us in a good position for the regional conference, which leads to the national level. Our goal from day one has been to win the national championship. We’ve got a group of guys out there that understand that 90 minutes is a game – not 89, not 87. They come out to play and they’ve always got two things on their mind – the next game, and the national championship.”

Restoring native populations of Southern Appalachian strain brook trout to their native watersheds is a priority for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC). Since the mid 1990s, the NCWRC has documented over 500 isolated populations of reproducing (wild) brook trout in western North Carolina. Of that group, approximately 36% have been identified as being purely Southern Appalachian strain, 10% are purely northern strain, and 54% are mixed genetically. Since 2004, the NCWRC has been integrally involved with the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture (EBTJV). The EBTJV is comprised of over 50 state and federal management agencies, non-governmental organizations, and academic institutions, and represents an unprecedented attempt to protect and restore populations of wild brook trout in the eastern United States.

Amanda Solesbee, a senior on the Montreat College women’s soccer team fed her teammates well on the field last week, nearly breaking the national NAIA record for assists in a single game as Montreat pounded Toccoa Falls College in a 7 – 1 victory. Head coach Dan Woerner knew Solesbee had a great game, but it wasn’t until he verified the stats the he realized her 6 assists blasted the previous Montreat school record and put Solesbee in the NAIA record books, tying Nicole Hanlon from Indiana Tech’s second place record. Jeana French from Hope International University in California holds the current record with 8 assists. The Lady Cavaliers are currently 3-1 on the season, scoring seven goals in each of their wins.
