Leicester, NC - Rose Hill Plantation developers want Western North Carolina residents to know they are serious about their pledge to be a positive addition to the Leicester community and good stewards of the land. In addition to constructing energy efficient homes, Rose Hill Plantation is hard at work landscaping planned green spaces, restoring the Turkey Creek section of the property and creating a refuge for area birds and wildlife.
In the beginning stages of construction, developers had to clear and shape the earth to establish the Rose Hill Plantation terraced home sites. This phase of construction drew some concerned comments from area residents who were startled to see mounds of red earth where grass and trees had been. Now that the home sites are established, the developers are staying true to their word to provide plenty of green space, replant and reforest the property.
One of the major undertakings set to begin this fall is the restoration of the Turkey Creek section of Rose Hill Plantation. One-half mile of Turkey Creek, a major bold stream that runs through North Buncombe County as a tributary to the French Broad River, borders the back of the property. Many years ago hardwood trees grew along Turkey Creek, but were removed when agriculture came into the region. Dr. Brian Joyce of Montreat College plans to assist Rose Hill Plantation with the restoration of the Turkey Creek area using North Carolina Department of Natural Resources guidelines. Joyce, Professor of Ecology and Chair of the Natural Sciences Department, will involve several of his fall classes with the project. Students will assist in the layout, design and the reforestation of the stream banks with native plants, grasses and hardwoods. This restoration will not only benefit Rose Hill Plantation homeowners, but also residents of the county by ensuring that Turkey Creek will thrive and flourish.
The waterfall, stream and ponds create delightful havens for Rose Hill Plantation residents to picnic, stroll or relax among nature. Homeowners will also enjoy hiking the trails through the 40-acre nature preserve on the property or stopping by the Meditation Garden near Turkey Creek. The far side of the property features a second pond that will be landscaped with deciduous trees and forage plants. There are also plans for a community vegetable garden where residents may grow their own organic vegetables.
