Piano, Violin Duo to Perform at Montreat College

Pianist John Cobb and violinist Amy Lovinger will perform at Montreat College’s Chapel of the Prodigal on Sunday, January 20, at 4:00 p.m. as part of the Friends of Music concert series. Their program will include music written for the piano and violin by Beethoven, Shostakovich, and Debussy, as well as solo piano works by Schumann and Liszt.

Dr. John Cobb, who has performed before at Montreat College, is an international performer and recording artist known for his broad interpretive range and technical command. The New York Times has praised his “solid technique, bronze tone and flexibility of interpretive style.” Dr. Cobb has performed internationally some of the most important works of contemporary music and has worked directly with many of the most influential composers of our era.

Dr. Cobb is a direct musical descendant of Franz Liszt through his teacher, pianist Claudio Arrau, whose teacher was a pupil of Liszt. He has recorded for Nonesuch, Desto, Spectrum, Coronet and Serenus records.

Amy Rose Lovinger, native of Suffern, NY, holds a bachelor’s degree from the Eastman School of Music and a master’s degree from Kent State University.  She has attended numerous music festivals, including Meadowmount School of Music, Juilliard String Quartet Seminar, Brevard Music Center, Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival and Chilingirian Quartet Seminar.  While a member of the Hyperion Quartet, Amy won the Russell Award at the 2002 Coleman National Chamber Music Competition.  In 2004 and 2005 she was a member of the Orquestra Classica da Madeira, Portugal.  This past spring Amy appeared as soloist with the Asheville Symphony.  Currently she is the principal second violinist of the Asheville Symphony, associate concertmaster of the Hendersonville Symphony, member of the Opal String Quartet and performs with the Asheville Lyric Opera.

As with all Friends of Music concerts, this performance is free to the public.

Montreat College is a Christ-centered liberal arts institution with its main campus for four-year traditional students in Montreat. The accelerated School of Professional and Adult Studies program has campuses in Asheville, Charlotte, and Black Mountain, with courses being taught in Cherokee, Murphy and other NC locations.
