On Saturday, October 6th, 95 students, faculty and staff from Montreat College ascended Mount Mitchell for the school’s “Mt. Mitchell Day.” The purpose of this event was to inform students about the ecology of the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. The college has sponsored this event for over 30 years.
All introductory biology students are required to attend. The group heard a devotion presented by Becky Frawley, Assistant Academic Dean. Then, the group split up into small groups which rotated through six stations with science faculty including the Mt. Mitchell museum. Each station focused on a specific topic. The topics covered included flora and fauna, ozone, acid deposition, weather and climate, the Balsam wooly adelgid, and cultural history of the area.
The event concluded with a hot lunch served in the picnic area.
