Montreat Golf Event Raises $47,000 for Scholarships
July 9, 2010. The Montreat College Business Partners Golf Tournament held on Tuesday, June 29 at the Cliffs at Walnut Cove was a huge success … though in a way that only golfers can appreciate. Rain, thunder and lightning delayed play for the twenty-three teams and eventually cut the tournament a few holes short of eighteen, but the event raised $47,250 for the Keystone Scholarship Fund for Montreat College students and provided plenty of good shots and great memories.
Allie Bennett, the Events Coordinator at Montreat College and a key organizer of the tournament, appreciated the teams and their enthusiasm: “Everyone wanted to play a full round, but all the golfers had a great attitude once the weather made it too dangerous to continue play.”
Ninety-one golfers still enjoyed the scenic course and a chance to hear stories from celebrity guests including DeWitt Weaver, a senior PGA tour player and 2-time winner during his days on the PGA tour and Steve Sloan, an All-American quarterback who played for the Alabama Crimson Tide from 1962-65.
The Cliffs team won the First Flight after recording a score of -8 while the Second Flight title was captured by White Insurance, which turned in a -2 score.
A number of other awards were given throughout the day. Jim Burt captured the longest drive contest for those 70 and over while Shane Birchbichler hit the longest drive among those players 69 and younger. Burt also won the putting contest while Tom Garrett had the closest result on any of the Par 3 closest-to-the-pin contests, missing the pin on #2 by a mere 23 inches.
Most importantly, the $47,250 raised will go to Montreat College students to help make a private, Christian education possible, and the total was a significant increase over the $37,000 the golf tournament raised in 2009.
