New Exhibit in Hamilton Gallery

Montreat College is presenting an exhibit of paintings by Rikki Roccanti entitled “From Page to Canvas” which can be seen on campus in the Hamilton Gallery from December 1, 2009 until January 31, 2010. Admission is free and all are invited to come see the seven original works.

A senior English major at Montreat College, Roccanti created the 18 x 24 inch paintings on canvas with tempera paint and are the artist’s effort to fuse her love of literature with her love of painting. Roccanti’s dual interests resulted in paintings which interpret the settings of famous works of literature or poems, and while the artist remained true to the authors’ descriptions, she said that the paintings necessarily focus on the “feeling or mood of the work of literature.”
Roccanti asserts that all readers “paint mental images of the scenes in the books we read” and hopes visitors to her exhibit will enjoy her interpretations “while creating their own images in their minds as well.”

The Hamilton Gallery is located on the mezzanine level of the L. Nelson Bell Library on the Montreat College campus. Gallery hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. For gallery exhibition information, contact gallery director Jim Southerland at 828-669-8012, ext. 3641.
