Montreat College Hosts Author of "Serve God, Save the Planet"

SEEDS, the student-led creation-care club at Montreat College, will welcome Dr. Matthew and Mrs. Nancy Sleeth for a convocation lecture at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, October 27 in Gaither Chapel on the Montreat College campus. The public is welcome to attend this free event.

Dr. Sleeth authored the book “Serve God, Save the Planet,” (Chelsea Green Publishing, 2007). Based at Houghton College in Pennsylvania, Dr. Sleeth leads Blessed Earth, an educational creation-care non-profit organization. According to their website, www.blessedearth.org, their mission is to inspire and equip “faith communities to become better stewards of the earth. Through outreach to churches, campuses and media we build bridges that promote measurable environmental change and meaningful spiritual growth.”

Recounting his determination to simplify his family’s life even as they embraced the Christian faith, “Serve God, Save the Planet” details Dr. Sleeth’s journey as he left his medical practice and they moved to a smaller home, acquired a hybrid car, grew an organic vegetable garden, hand washed clothes, as they sought to reduce the footprint they left on a world they believe God called them to care for.

Since the book’s appearance, Matthew and Nancy Sleeth have spoken at churches and colleges and before the media more than 850 times. Their daughter Emma wrote a book aimed at teens entitled “It’s Easy Being Green.”
