If you look at our Montreat College logo, there is an arch over the name of the College. The stone at the center of the arch is called the keystone. The primary definition of this stone is the wedge-shaped piece at the crown of an arch that locks the other pieces in place. In addition the keystone is something on which associated pieces depend for support.

For Montreat College students, the Keystone Scholarship is the primary funding that holds each student in place, providing support on which they greatly depend.

The answer is yes and no. Many colleges raise funds every year through the “Annual Fund.” These gifts may be used for student scholarships, faculty development, raises for staff, or capital improvements. Many Annual Funds support a variety of programs. At Montreat College the Keystone Scholarship is raised annually yes, but solely to support academic and need-based scholarships for students.

This fund is a critical part of our strategy to enable deserving students to get a Montreat education. The Keystone Scholarship is the primary way we recruit and retain students and remain competitive with what other institutions are able to offer to their students. Without the Keystone Scholarship many students would be forced to pursue other avenues for their education or perhaps pursue no education at all. A quality Christ-centered education is an expensive, but worthwhile endeavor and friends of the college make it possible.

The Keystone Scholarship is awarded through the Financial Aid Office.

Each student’s financial need and academic performance are inserted into a formula that determines the level of award each student will receive. This determination is objective and not based on any outside affiliation or relationship with Montreat College, athletic ability, ethnicity, gender, or birthplace.

Every academic year over 600 alumni and friends of the college give to the Keystone Scholarship, which provides critical support to over 450 students.

If there were no Keystone Scholarship, many students simply could not afford a Christ-centered education.
