What's the size of the student body?
This year's enrollment is 984; 423 of those students are on the main campus in the School of Arts & Sciences, while 561 are enrolled in evening programs in the School of Professional & Adult Studies.
What's the student/faculty ratio?
Classes are small, with a student/faculty ratio of 12:1, so students receive personal attention not available at larger schools.
Is Montreat accredited?
Yes, Montreat is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Associ ation of Colleges and Schools to award associate's, bachelor's, and master's degrees. Our education program is also accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, and our business program is accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education.
What is security like on campus?
Campus police are present on campus from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. nightly and patrol randomly throughout the day. See our crime statistics.
What kinds of activities are available on campus?
In addition to intercollegiate sports, Montreat offers an extensive intramurals program. Weekly student activities are scheduled, such as student performances, concerts, drama performances, open mic coffeehouses, sporting events, and trips to Asheville for bowling and other activities; see the Student Activities Calendar. Annual student events include Midnight Madness (to kick off the basketball season), Fall Festival, and the King of Hearts pageant on Valentine's Day. The mountain valley location provides opportunities for hiking on the many trails surrounding campus or learning to kayak or canoe on Lake Susan, as well as playing frisbee or tennis or biking. Discipleship groups, including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, are formed each semester, and ministry and service opportunities, such as to Manna Food Bank, the Presbyterian Home for Children, and Habitat for Humanity, are available. Montreat also has an active student government association, known as the Bridge, through which students may form additional clubs and organizations. Other opportunities include a student newspaper, an honor society, a literary magazine, a chapel band, and specific discipline clubs, such as Students in Free Enterprise.
What is there to do outside of Montreat?
Just a few miles from Montreat, students enjoy hanging out at coffeehouses, restaurants, or ice cream shops or browsing the historic downtown of Black Mountain, the "front porch of North Carolina." The city of Asheville, just 15 miles away, offers shopping, cultural events, dining, and recreational activities. In addition, Western North Carolina provides numerous sites of interest, such as Biltmore Estate, the Grove Park Inn, Pisgah National Forest, the North Carolina Arboretum, and other attractions. It's surprisingly affordable, since 98% of students receive some form of financial aid. See this year's tuition.
What types of financial assistance does Montreat offer?
Montreat offers a substantial and comprehensive financial aid program, including scholarships, grants, and loans as well as work/study opportunities.
Are there jobs available on or off campus?
Yes; in addition to our work/study opportunities, the Career Development Office helps students find employment both during college and after graduation.
What are the requirements for admission?
Requirements are a little different for high school students and transfer students.
Does Montreat accept AP credit or CLEP scores?
Yes, we do. Official copies of the AP and CLEP test results will be required before credit is awarded. Please have these sent to the Admissions office for evaluation.
Will Montreat College accept college credits that I have earned while I was still in high school?
Yes; we accept transfer credit from other regionally accredited institutions of courses completed with a grade of "C" or better. Courses that do not apply to a student's degree program will not be accepted. Please be sure to include an official transcript from the institution along with your application for admission.
