Step 3: Apply for Loans - SPAS

If you are only applying for federal and state grants,

you do not need to apply for loans and may proceed to the next step.

(please note there are currently no grants offered for Masters students at this time)

If you are a current student and  have received Stafford Loans with Montreat in the past,

you do not need to apply for loans again.

  • This step will take you about 30 minutes to complete and will take you through both the Master Promissory Note and Entrance Interview process.
  • Please sign with your PIN# for the fastest processing.
  • If you wish to mail in your signed MPN, mail it directly to the lender, not to Montreat College.
  • Apply for the Stafford Loan.
  • If you stop part way through, you will need to start over upon returning to the MPN application.

  • Federal regulations require all first-time borrowers at Montreat Collete to participate in Stafford Entrance Loan Counseling before your loan can be processed.

The Master Promissory Note ("MPN") is a multi-year binding document that must be signed by the student borrower before Montreat College can certify the loan. The MPN states the terms and conditions of the loan including repayment schedule, interest rate, deferment, and cancellation policy.

If you have another MPN at another college, you must still fill out a new one with Montreat College.

Due to the multi-year feature of the MPN you will be able to receive Federal Stafford Loans without having to sign additional promissory notes as long as you remain eligible for Federal Stafford Loans and remain with the same lender for up to 10 years.

You should keep a copy of this document for your records until your loan has been repaid.

Opening of the MPN website will open a separate browser window. When you have completed the MPN, close the MPN window and return to this page.

(Please note: Montreat College school code is 002948).

Preferred Lender Statement

The Financial Aid Office at Montreat has selected a diverse list of lenders that offer the highest level of service and other benefits for our students. We build our list each year based on a number of considerations which include: Ease of processing, borrower benefits, customer service to both the student and school and whether or not the lender sells its loans. Students have the right to choose any lender that participates in the federal student loan program and we are required to accommodate the student if he/she chooses a lender not on our list. However, we feel that a preferred list is a helpful tool for students because the Financial Aid Office has investigated and determined that the listed lenders strive for excellence and will service our students with excellence during all stages of the student loan process. These lenders will also enable us to live out our promise and mission statement of being "Christ-Centered, Student-Focused, and Service-Driven" as they are all highly professional and are trusted to serve our students well.

If you would prefer to use a lender who is not on our lender list, please contact that lender for their Stafford MPN instructions.  You will also need to fill out a seperate Entrance Interview.

You may apply for Private (Alternative) Loans here if your Stafford Loans and grants do not cover your classes in your academic year (requires a credit check).

Graduate students may apply for Graduate Plus Loans here instead of Stafford Loans, but Plus loans must be applied for yearly (requires a credit check).

Please contact your lender for further information on their Alternative and Plus Loan programs if interested.

The information in this list has been provided by each lender and is subject to change at any time. Accordingly, neither ECMC nor the school can verify the accuracy of the information or how current it may be.
