Determined, Softball team takes #1 Milligan to 13 innings in semi-finals

Montreat's Lady Cavalier Softball team put on a season-ending show at the 2008 AAC Softball Tournament by taking #1 seed Milligan College to 13 innings. Milligan went on to escape the upset, 2-1, but not before Montreat demonstrated what tournament play was all about. Entering the tournament seeded last (#9), Montreat came up one run shy of playing for the tournament championship, which Milligan ultimately went on to win. The Lady Cavaliers won an unprecedented three games on Thursday to earn the right to play in the semi-final game against Milligan. Led by the pitching heroics of Shelby English who pitched all but one out of the 13 innings, and by Brittany Burns who went 5-for-6 at the plate, Montreat created the great excitement that is often found in tournament play.

"Defensively, we played an amazing game.  To play thirteen innings and only have one error, shows how well the girls played," said Coach Katie Duvall.  "I am so proud of them.  Shelby pitched an amazing game."

With their tournment life looking to end in the 7th inning as they trailed Milligan by one run, Montreat delivered another ray of tournament hope as Coach Duvall sent in freshman Morgan Mills in to pinch hit; it was Mills that delivered the game-tying RBI double and fueled the determination that led through 13 long innings!

Though the Lady Cavs fell one run short, they capped off an amazing AAC tournment run.  The team finished the tournment in 3rd place.
