Cavalier Track & Field competes well at Duke's ASICS Invitational

The Montreat College track team participated this weekend at Duke University's ASICS Invitational. In her first official track meet since recovering from being ill, Elyse Gildernew (Fr., Lookout Mt, GA) had a solid 1500m race, setting a new personal best of 5:28.39. "It was great to see Elyse compete again. The 1500 seems like such a great event for her down the road," said Coach Larios. Gildernew also competed in the 5000m run on Saturday, running 22:19. Also running well for the men was sophomore Wilbourn Kosgei (Eldoret, Kenya). Kosgei finished 3rd out of 63 runners in the 1500m development run (4:01.27), and he also finished 3rd out of 104 runners in the 800m run on Saturday, clocking 1:55.32.

"We got a really good lesson in racing this weekend," added Larios. "Some of us needed to be a little more aggressive by not getting pushed around so much.  I think we learned a few things that should help us race better in the future."

Ben Hall, last week's AAC Athlete of the Week, competed in his first ever 3000m Steeplechase, clocking a 10:12.40.  Talisa Bishop competed in the 5000m run and finished in 19:06.41.  Arilicia Adkins competed in the 10K finishing with a personal best time of 40:35.88.  Adkins also competed in the 800m, though she was tripped up and stumbled at the 200m mark, causing her to not complete the race.

Talisa Bishop and Wilbourn Kosgei will compete at this weekend's Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, TN.  They both will be contesting the 10k in hopes of qualifying for the national championships in that event.  The rest of the team will be idle as they prepare for the AAC Track & Field Championships that will be held on April 18-19 at Banner Elk, NC on the campus of Lees McCrae.
