Baseball splits with UVA-Wise; lose an extra-innings heartbreaking game two
Montreat College traveled to UVA-Wise for a conference doubleheader on Monday earning a split as they would take the first game 7-5 and lose a heartbreaker in extra innings 8-9. In the first game, sophomore Patrick Ballew would pitch into the fourth only surrendering two runs while striking out four. He would give way to Seth Blevins, John Shannon, Brian Greene and Garrett Jones before the first game was over as the bullpen would hold the Highland Cavaliers to only three more runs over the next five frames. Offensively, Montreat would have a very good day at the plate accumulating 14 hits in all but needing late inning heroics by Cameron Duckworth as he would blast a game winning two-run homer to win it in the tenth. Chad Dawkins, Steven Hoyle and Dane Phillips would each have two hits apiece to lead the Cavaliers in the victory.
In the second game, Garrett Jones would pick up where he left off and start the second game after earning the victory in the first. He would leave with the lead but the Cavaliers would find many ways to allow UVA-Wise back into the game. Montreat held an 8-2 advantage through four innings but could not muster any more offense as the Highland Cavaliers would score seven unanswered runs to win it in the eighth. Senior Jesse wise would have two hits in the nightcap as well as Dane Phillips. Montreat College now stands at 27-10 and 8-4 in Conference.
