Jason Adkins, a former powerhouse on the mound for the Montreat College Cavalier baseball program, has just signed a contract to play professionally with the Midwest Sliders, a minor league team in the Frontier League.
Adkins was in the rotation for the Cavaliers during the 2006 and 2007 seasons, where he maintained an impressive 2.49 ERA, striking out 106 and 104 hitters, respectively. He was picked for the All-Conference and All-Region teams in the Appalachian Athletic Conference both years. He was also named the ACC’s “2006 Region Pitcher of the Year.”
Cavalier Head Coach Travis Little says, "Jason was an unbelievable competitor. When things got tough in a contest, he was one who could completely take over the game. One professional scout once said that he was the best lefty to ever pitch in our conference. Another coach in the league said that he was the most intimidating pitcher that he has ever had to face in the league. These are incredible compliments and a great tribute to Jason's time here at Montreat. It is very tough to replace a player like him.”
Other Cavaliers selected by competitive Intercollegiate Summer Leagues
Several other Cavaliers have also just committed to playing in summer leagues around the country. Patrick Ballew has signed with the Martinsville Mustangs in the Coastal Plain League, and both Keith Para and Brian Greene will play for the Gastonia Grizzlies in the Coastal Plain League.
Stephen Hoyle and Jonathan Madera will join the Joplin Slashers in the Jayhawk League this summer. Four Cavaliers will play in the Rocky Mountain Collegiate League: Cameron Duckworth and Garrett Jones with the Ft. Collins Foxes; John Shannon with the Parker Express; and Chris Allen for the Cheyene Grizzlies.
Steven Collado and Adam Speas have both agreed to play with the Farmington Firebirds in the Kentucky Intercollegiate League.
Andrew Tallent and Aaron Hughes will take the field with the Morganton Aggies in the Southern Collegiate League.
