Kosgei qualifies for Track & Field Nationals; earns AAC Runner of the Week
The Cavalier track teams set more school records and qualified one more athlete for the NAIA National Track & Field Championships this past weekend. The men were represented by Wilbourn Kosgei (So., Eldoret, Kenya), Ben Hall (Fr., Columbus, NC), and freshman Eric Bowers (Lancaster, PA) at the 49er Classic Invitational held at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte this past weekend. Kosgei set a new Montreat College 5000m record with his national championship qualifying run of 15:11.74 in the 5000 meter run (4:53 per mile pace). For his 8th place finish in a heavily D-I contended race, Kosgei was honored as the AAC Runner of the Week.
Also running a terrific race was freshman Ben Hall. Hall solidified his personal best mark of 15:48.43 (5:05 per mile pace) as the second fastest 5K run by a Montreat runner. Teammate Eric Bowers also competed in the 400 meter race, clocking in at 53.17.
On the women's side, Montreat was represented by Arilicia Adkins (So., Seffner, FL) at the Walt Disney World Track & Field Invitational. Adkins ran a personal best 19:21.86 to finish fourth overall in the 5000m race.
"This is a solid start for the outdoor season. Everyone is progressing very well, and I'm certain we're going to run faster," said Coach Larios.
The team will head over to North Carolina State University this Thursday and Friday to compete in the highly competitive Raleigh Relays.
