Cavalier Basketball signs two local stars

Coach Bill Robinson didn't have to travel far to find two standout players to join his already talented Montreat College squad. Just down Old Fort Mountain, seniors Cameron Hayes and Dustin Harris have been quietly putting together impressive high school basketball resumes. Hayes and Harris, who have attended Marion Christian for three and two years respectively, have helped the Knights dominate CCAA (Carolinas Christian Athletic Association) conference play for the past two years and have had solid individual performances against stronger non-conference opponents. Both players made their commitments to Montreat official last Friday in a ceremony at Marion Christian Academy.

Hayes, a natural shooting guard, led all scorers in Western N.C. his junior season with a 26.0 ppg average. Having to transition to point guard this season, the 6-3 Hayes has still managed to average an impressive 22 points a game while dishing out 10 assists per game in his new role.

Perhaps even more impressive than his basketball resume are Hayes' academic achievements. He currently maintains a 3.7 GPA and will graduate from Marion Christian with honors.

A 6-6 center, Harris has dominated the post this season in conference play, averaging 25 points and an astonishing 15 rebounds per game. His biggest test of the season was facing Veritas' 7-1 Catalin Baciu, who is on his way to Clemson. Marion Christian suffered a 40-point loss that night, but Harris shined against Baciu, outscoring him 29-17 and drawing five fouls on him in the matchup. Harris also excels in the classroom, holding down a 3.0 GPA while at MCA.
