Cavalier Baseball opens 2008 with a five-game road trip

Rome, Ga., Berry College- The beginning of the season started in Rome, Georgia against a very good Berry College team. In game one of the double-header, Patrick Ballew (Gloucester, Va) would be the opening day starter for the Cavaliers. Ballew would settle in and throw five solid innings before tiring in the bottom of the fifth and earning the loss in a 1-7 defeat. He would allow five hits, five runs while recording five strikeouts. There was not a lot of offensive output by the Cavaliers in this contest as Brent Ashbaugh (Tara, Ontario) was the only Cavalier player with a multi-hit game, getting on base in all three attempts. Tristan Hollar (Huntersville, NC) had the lone RBI for Montreat.

Berry College-game two

Game two of the day had Garrett Jones (Elwood, IN) taking to the mound for the Cavaliers. Jones would go four innings allowing three earned runs on six hits in the 1-11 loss. Chad Dawkins (Rockingham, NC) and Jesse Wise (Benson, NC) had two hits each and a walk, while Cameron Duckworth (Asheville, NC) would hit the first homerun on the season for Montreat.

Thomas College-game one

Saturday would be a new day for the Cavaliers as they would start a three game set with the Nighthawks of Thomas University. John Shannon (Waynesville, NC) would get the task of stopping the opening day slide. He would pitch lights out baseball for seven and a third innings only giving up five hits without allowing an earned run. Shannon would strike out five batters and walk four. However, Thomas University would come back in their frame of the seventh to tie the score at two apiece sending the game to extra innings. Chad Dawkins (Rockingham, NC) would be the hero on this day adding late inning heroics with a homerun to go ahead by one. Dawkins would also add two more hits on the day as well. Steven Hoyle (Cherryville,NC) would come in to finish the game on the mound and earn the 3-2 victory. Hoyle would also be dynamic at the plate going three for four in the game.

Thomas University-game two

Game two of the twin bill would send Aaron Hughes (Murphy, NC) to the mound for the Cavaliers. It would be a short stint for the sophomore. True freshmen Seth Blevins (Chattanooga, TN) would come in relief and pitch very effectively throwing three and a third innings only allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out three.  Steven Hoyle (Cherryville,NC) had the biggest hit of the game breaking a 2-2 tie with a single through the left side driving in Chad Dawkins (Rockingham, NC). Hoyle would have three hits in the game to lead the Cavaliers. Jesse Wise (Benson, NC) and Brent Ashbaugh (Tara, Ontario) would have two hits apiece as well. Brian Greene (Shelby, NC) would come in to close the deal on a 4-3 lead. Greene would pitch two complete recording three strikeouts with no earned runs.

Thomas University-game three

One of the newest members of the Cavalier team, Jonathon Madera (Santiago, DR), would take the hill for the final game of the road trip and pitch a gem of a game. Madera would pitch six strong innings only surrendering three hits and one earned run. He also recorded six strikeouts. The bats would finally come alive for the Cavaliers while pounding out fifteen hits and eleven runs. Leading the way would be Chad Dawkins (Rockingham, NC) with four hits and two RBI and Brent Ashbaugh (Tara,Ontario) with three hits and four RBI including a late inning double to blow the game wide open. Dane Phillips (Charlotte, NC) also delivered with three hits, and Casey Duckworth (Asheville, NC) would come in off the bench and provide a huge spark with a pinch hit single to center to plate a huge run. Brian Greene (Shelby, NC) would come in and once again shut the door on Thomas with an inning of relief work and a strikeout ending the game at 11-5.
