Frequently Asked Questions
Why Do Students Seek Counseling? College is a time of growth and change; it is common for difficulties to occasionally arise. Many students seek counseling for a range of concerns that may include: depression, anxiety & stress, relationships, body image issues, sexual abuse or assault, grief and loss, or just needing someone to talk to.
What Can I Expect When I Visit The Counseling Center? Counseling offers students the opportunity to talk to someone in a caring, confidential setting. Typically during your first visit to the Counseling Center, you will meet with a counselor who will ask you about your current concerns. This information will used to determine how best to meet your needs and goals, whether through brief or long-term counseling, or through referral to a local therapist, psychiatrist, or other community resource.
Is There A Cost For Services? Services are available to students free of charge. If you need a referral for local mental health resources, the counselor or nurse can help connect you with providers covered by the Student Health Insurance plan.
Are There Other Types of Counseling Offered on Campus? Students needing help with job & career goals can utilize Career Services on campus. Pastoral counseling and prayer support are available through the Chaplain's Office.
In Case of Emergency: Crises or emergencies during office hours take priority (crises include such issues as suicidal individuals, sexual assault, urgent or dangerous situations, etc.). If there is an emergency, please contact the Director of Counseling, Campus Police, Residence Life staff, or other Student Services staff right away, or call Black Mountain Fire & Rescue at 669-9117.
What if I Have a Mental Health-Related Question, But I Don't Want to Ask Someone in Person? There is a confidential website that is customized for Montreat College students: Ulifeline.org provides mental health information, a "Self-Evaluator" tool, access to a mental health library, and suicide-prevention resources.
