Volleyball falls to Union College; demonstrates tremendous character!

Unfortunately, a team’s season is often judged by wins and losses. And although Montreat’s volleyball team stands at 7-10 overall and 2-5 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, one would have to watch these ladies in action to see that “winning” is certainly taking place. Montreat hosted the conference’s top team in Union College this past Saturday at the McAlister Gymnasium, falling to Union in four games, 28-30, 25-30, 30-24, and 24-30. Though falling short, this match demonstrated the character of the Lady Cavs as they played each ball as if it were their last. Each point, won or lost, was concluded with sincere hand-clapping and high-fives for the effort the team put into it. “Today was a great team effort. We played Union very tight, and I think we gave them a scare,” said Head Coach Leslie Gehris, “we never gave up, and I hope we carry this momentum to the rest of the season.”

Seniors Allison Williams and Jessica Huntley had standout performances for Montreat.  Williams recorded 13 kills for the night and 4 solo blocks.  Defensively, Huntley gave the Lady Cavs great hope as she dug 20 of Union’s hard spikes.  Danny Bowers also earned 13 kills and Rebekah Henderson added 11 of her own and 4 solo blocks.  It was Ally Baumgartner however that gave Union a tough time at the net with 6 solo blocks of her own.  Immediately following the hard fought match, Montreat’s women demonstrated their appreciation for their loyal fans with cheerful applauding and sincere smiles.  “These ladies are very special,” added Coach Gehris, “we had quite a few recruits in the stands today, and I am very proud of what they saw in our team.”

The Lady Cavs play host to conference foe Milligan College this Tuesday at 6:30pm.  Everyone is encouraged to come out and witness this special group of ladies represent Montreat College.
