2007-2008 Women's Golf Team
Season Outlook
Beginning in the fall of 2006, the Montreat College Women’s Golf Program started competition in the Appalachian Athletic Conference and Region XII of the NAIA. During the course of the 2006-2007 season, the women’s team finished last in their first tournament but continued to improve with each tournament they played. As the fall season came to a close, the team at that time shot the school record for scoring (358) and finished in fourth place at a tournament in Goergia. The team played with just four individuals during the fall as Freshman Amanda Thompson from Jackson, Tennessee had surgery and was unable to play.
When the spring season started, the team was again down to four not at full strength. The team started the spring season off strong finishing in second place at the Montreat College Spring Invitational-winning the first trophy ever for the golf programs at Montreat College. They continue their strong play for all of the spring, finishing the regular season with (2) second place finishes and (1) fourth place finish. At the NAIA Region XII championship, the women’s golf program did something that no other golf team at Montreat College had ever done. The Women won the Regional and set a new scoring record with a (354) in the second round. With the win the women’s program finished the season as the number 1 ranked team in the region.
As the new season 2007-2008 has begun, the women have (2) second place finishes in their two tournaments of the fall, and again have established a new scoring record of (351). I have all five returners coming back with the addition of three new freshmen for this season. Returnees for the women’s golf program; Amber Cody-(Junior, Marion, NC)-All AAC conference, All Region XII, Melissa Baker-(Sophomore, Clayton, NC)-All AAC conference, Ashley Mitcham-(Sophomore, Waynesville, NC), Amanda Thompson-(Sophomore, Jackson, TN)-All AAC conference, and Aimee Turner-(Sophmore, China Grove, NC). The three new freshman additions for the women’s program; Courtney Brown-(Freshman, Mooresville, NC), Caitlin Dempsey-(Freshman, Brantford, FL) and Allie Wall-(Freshman, Marion, NC).
I am excited about having everyone back plus the addition of the three freshmen. With the blessings of the Good Lord and hard work, we hope to have the opportunity of once again challenging for the AAC conference and Region XII championship.
