Coach Craig Jackson is thrilled to have Mizok on his Lady Cavalier squad next season, "We're very excited to have someone of Lindsay’s talent level, character, and work ethic join the Montreat basketball family. Mizok will also run cross country in the fall for Coach Larios, "Lindsay will give us more depth as well. She comes from a successful program in high school and I have no doubts that she will continue to progress at the college level." The Lady Cavaliers fell to Milligan College Saturday night, 74-90. It wasn't for a lack of effort however, as Whitney Mace had a career night with 33 points, four steals, and three assists. Her 33 points came off of a 11-for-21 night, including 8-for-17 from the 3-point line. "We fell behind in the first half, played a little timid, but we came out and outscored them in the second half, but it was too late," said Jackson. Read More

Coach Jackson has been a busy man lately. With the Lady Cavaliers preparing for their final regular season game this weekend and the AAC tournament just around the corner, Jackson has been hitting the recruiting trail rather heavily, and has come home with signed letters of intent. Jackson has announced the signing of two more great recruits for the Lady Cavs basketball season next fall- Katie Watkins and Caitlin DeBoer. Earlier this week, Jackson announced his first two signees, Caitlyn Chambers and Alicia Wallace. With his goal of having 18 players next fall, Jackson is well on his way of adding the necessary depth, and talent, needed to compete for the elusive AAC crown. Read More

The Lady Cavaliers used a well-balanced offensive attack to defeat Bluefield College last night, 67-59. Montreat trailed by five at the half, 28-23, before taking control down the stretch. "This was a great come-from-behind win," said Coach Jackson, "we had six out of seven players in double figures... it was a great team victory tonight, especially to come from behind, and on the road." Montreat was led in scoring again by Kim Staley (Fr., Rutherfordton, NC) with 14 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Sophomore forward Kera Bryant (Jacksonville, FL) also had a solid all-around game with 12 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Bryant shot 5-for-9 from the field. Read More

Montreat women's basketball Coach Craig Jackson has made a statement this season. With only half the team as most other AAC rosters, Jackson has led his team to a 12-15, and 5-10 conference record, which is a great improvement from recent years- though he contends this is only the beginning. He is well on his way to filling his roster with the talent he believes will take the Lady Cavaliers to the top of the conference. With that goal in mind, Coach Jackson has recently announced the signing of two star players for next year's team; Caitlyn Chambers, a 5-8 senior star from Greenville Tech Charter High School, will be joining her future Lady Cavalier teammate Alicia Wallace, a 6-2 star center from North Surry High School, as Montreat's newest additions. Jackson believes both young ladies will have an immediate impact on the team and in the conference. Read More

The Lady Cavaliers lost another grueling AAC contest to Tennessee Wesleyan, 62-71. Montreat hit the locker room at the halfway mark tied at 28 points, though it could not handle its opponent's deep bench; TWC had 10 different scorers, with five players hitting seven or more points. Montreat managed to have two scorers in double figures. Kim Staley led all scores with 21 points and nine rebounds. Read More

Montreat is now 12-14 overall and 5-10 in the conference standings. Read More

With star player Chazaree Wright out with a leg injury, Coach Jackson's Lady Cavaliers fell to one of the top AAC teams last night in Covenant College, 67-79. "It's really tough when you lose your top scorer who's also our top rebounder," said Jackson, "we have to continue to find ways to make up for that. We have to rely on the bench and the other players to step up. I felt we did some good things there down the stretch, cutting the lead to just one a couple of times. All in all, we played a pretty solid game against them." Picking up some of the scoring responsibility was Sophomore forward Whitney Boone (Bakersville, NC), as she dished in 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Boone was 7-for-16 for the night, with 2-of-5 from 3-point land. Another Sophomore, Kera Bryant (Jacksonville, FL), stepped up her offensive contributions by adding 12 points and six rebounds for the Lady Cavs. Bryant was 6-of-10 from the floor. Read More

It was one of those nights Coach Jackson wishes to put behind him. After giving the Lady Bulldogs of Union College a tough game at home earlier in the year, Montreat's Lady Cavaliers went into Saturday's game poised to make another strong showing in the AAC. Instead, the Lady Bulldogs, coming off of disappointing loss to Milligan College earlier in the week, took out their frustration against the Lady Cavaliers in a lopsided 84-55 victory. "It was one of those nights," said Coach Jackson, "they really pressed us and played with a lot of intensity. They took a big lead early on and we just couldn't get back into our game." Read More

Within minutes of tip-off, Montreat's Lady Basketball coach Craig Jackson didn't like what he saw. The Lady Cobras of Virginia Intermont (6-15, 3-7) took a commanding 15-2 lead over Montreat. After regrouping, Montreat went into the locker room still trailing by 10 points. It was in the locker room that Jackson challenged his ladies-- and they responded. Montreat went on to win a gutsy 79-75 AAC home game. "This was a huge come-from-behind win for us," said Coach Jackson, "it was really tough going down early like we did and fighting back. This is the first time we've come back like this all season, so it was nice to do, especially at home." It was Janel Cox that led the way for the Lady Cavaliers. Read More

Montreat College suffered a tough loss to Milligan College last night in AAC action, 53-69. Milligan showed tough physical play all night and demonstrated why they are 8-1 in conference play, winning 10 of their last 14 games. "They played really physical and we didn't really handle the pressure all that well," said Coach Jackson, "there's not much more I can say, we've struggled on the road and they are one of the best teams in the conference." Montreat was down nine at the half, before losing by 16 points. The Lady Cavs were led by Chazaree Wright's 18 points. Whitney Boone and Janel Cox each contributed 12 points, while Kim Staley scored 10 of her own. Read More

Janel Cox also provided great support as she contributed 16 points and eight assists in their conference win over Bluefield College, 90-77. Cox also managed to have a tremendous night from the free throw line hitting 12-of-13. "It was great to get a home conference win," said Coach Jackson, "it's also great to get up over the five hundred mark. We now sit alone at sixth place in the AAC." The Lady Cavs are now 10-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play. Read More

Montreat dropped an important conference game to Tennessee Wesleyan (6-11, 4-3) last night, 59-71. The loss now puts Montreat four games out of the lead in the AAC race. The Lady Cavalier Player of the Game honor went to Chazaree Wright. Wright was able to contribute 15 points and pull down 13 rebounds. However, it was not enough to hold off four Lady Bulldogs in double figures. TWC was led by Lindsey Jackson's 18 points and five rebounds. "We had a hard time guarding the basketball tonight," said Head Coach Craig Jackson, "We sent Tennessee Wesleyan to the line way too many times. Hopefully, we can bounce back against Bennett on Thursday." Coach Jackson makes reference to TWC's 19-of-28 free throws, compared to Montreat's 6-of-8. Read More

Chazaree Wright was near perfect for the Lady Cavs as she hit 13-of-14 shots in a sensational 66-44 victory over UVA-Wise. Wright earned the AAC's Player of the Week honors last week for her consistent double-doubles; though she wasn't able to pull down her season's average 10 rebounds, Wright did manage to put her hands on eight rebounds, one block, and hit 3-of-4 free throws. Both teams sized each other up during the first half as Montreat went into the locker room with a one point low scoring lead, 18-17. Read More

Montreat College fell to 1-4 in the AAC race by losing to King College last night, 61-66. "Good things are happening on the road for us, but unfortunately we fell a little short tonight" said Head Coach Craig Jackson, "King College is a tough place to play, hopefully, the next time we face them, the outcome will be different." King College fed off the home crowd as they overcame Montreat's nearly 45% shooting from the floor compared to their 37%. The difference maker in the contest, like in most close games, boiled down to the fundamentals- free throws. Montreat shot only 6-for-10, while the Lady Tornadoes hit 27-of-31. Read More

Coach Craig Jackson's Lady Cavaliers accomplished something tonight that they haven't done in recent years, surfaced from the depths of the .500 mark. Behind the strong trio of Chazaree Wright, Whitney Boone, and Kim Staley, Montreat defeated a reluctant Alice Loyd team 82-77 at McAlister Gmynasium, taking the team to 7-7 overall. Chazaree Wright had another double-double night as she led the Lady Cavaliers past Spelman College, 72-67. The Lady Cavs are making great strides behind new head coach Craig Jackson. Montreat now has an overall 6-7 record; their 6th win surpasses their total season wins over the past few years. “This was a great win on the road. Spelman was rather physical, so we weren’t able to take the lead until the final five minutes,” said Jackson, “we will now take some time off until after the Christmas break. So all in all, it was a great win and a great first semester.” Kim Staley had another solid performance with 16 points and nine rebounds. Montreat managed to take care of the ball as they recorded only 14 turnovers, their fewest of the season. Read More

The Lady Cavs fell last night to Covenant College, 98-85. Montreat played their typical aggressive play that Coach Craig Jackson has come to expect; however, early foul trouble gave the Lady Scot's an edge as two of Montreat's starters fouled out, and two others ended the game with four fouls. "This was a very good effort against a very good team on the road," said Coach Jackson, "obviously, our team's foul trouble made it challenging. We need to get others involved and contributing." The Cavs sent the nation's number one free throw shooting team to the line 43 times, which proved to be the deciding factor. Covenant College has been recently ranked #22 in the country; all things considered however, Montreat College played admirably against Covenant. Read More

MONTREAT — Basketball had not been a lot of fun for Craig Jackson or the Montreat women’s team in recent years. Formerly a Division I coach at University of the Pacific, Jackson endured a 5-22 record his last complete season there and resigned after a 1-5 start in 2005-06. Meanwhile, the Montreat women have finished next-to-last in the Appalachian Athletic Conference for four straight years while averaging five wins per season. But after their first month together, Jackson and the Cavaliers look like a nice combination. They went into Tuesday’s game needing one win to tie last season’s victory total, and they’ve been competitive in two league losses. “We’re all just really excited,” sophomore Janel Cox said. “Coach tells us to trust him and good things will happen. ... Our offense is more structured, and so is our defense. We work well in his system, too.” Junior Whitney Mace, in her third season at Montreat, said: “Coach Jackson knows the game really well. We have set plays, and he makes sure we know what we’re doing. It makes the game fun.” Read More

Montreat College defeated one the league’s best teams in Bryan College last night on its home court, 81-66. The Lady Cavs were led once again by Chazaree Wright. Wright has now positioned herself as one of the most versatile players in the AAC by virtue of her seven consecutive double-double games. Wright led all scores with 31 points and 11 rebounds against the Lady Lions. Whitney Boone, a 5’ 7” sophomore forward from Bakersfield, NC, also provided the home crowd with great entertainment as she posted her double-double for the night with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Janel Cox nearly had one of her own with 17 points and eight rebounds; though Cox’s favorite shot came from the free throw line as she was successful from it 13 out of 14 times. Montreat led at the halfway point by a 30-28 margin, before breaking the game open in the second half. Read More

Chazaree Wright's fifth double-double in nine games was not enough to hold off the Lady Cobras of Virginia Intermont College. VIC's shot with 3.6 seconds remaining in overtime sealed the early season conference loss for Montreat. Once again outnumbered by another team's roster, the Lady Cavs have continued to pour out their team determination. "Any time you lose like we did, it is hard to swallow. We executed and did some good things, now it is time to bounce back and get ready for Union on Saturday," said Coach Jackson. Wright's 24 points and 12 rebounds led all scorers for the contest. Kim Staley also had a great night as she poured in 12 points of her own and had 5 rebounds. Read More

While most Montreat students were away feasting over turkey and stuffing, the Lady Cavs of Montreat College hit the road for a two-game tournament at Tennessee Temple University. Montreat came home with a 4-4 overall record, good enough to remain in 3rd place in the AAC standings. Chazaree Wright, a junior from New Haven, CT, had plenty to be thankful for as she led Montreat in their first game against Mount Vernon Nazarene (4-1) with a stunning 31 points. Kim Staley added 11 points for the Lady Cavs while Whitney Boone contributed 9 of her own; however, they were not able to hold off the Lady Cougars; MVN handed Montreat their fourth loss of the season, 68-62. The Lady Cavaliers had a stellar weekend of basketball as they took home the UVA-Wise Basketball Classic Tournament. "It was great to get these wins, especially in a gym where we will revisit for a conference game," said Coach Craig Jackson, "The girls played great and we were able to get contributions from everyone on the bench as well. In both games, we led by double-digits and had two great team wins." Read More

The Lady Cavs put up another great fight against another tough NCAA opponent before late game turnovers led them to a 75-48 loss. Montreat kept things rather interesting throughout the first half as they hovered near a single-digit deficit. The Lady Cavs went into the locker room trailing UNC-A, 37-23. “I thought we played them really well the first half… it’s tough for us to keep the big teams off the glass,” said Coach Jackson, “we had too many turnovers in the second half. All in all, it was a good effort from our women. These were two tough teams we have played, and I think they got better tonight than the Gardner-Webb game.” Read More

Coach Jackson’s Lady Cavaliers ran out of momentum this weekend against D-I Gardner-Webb University and lost their first game of the season 98-53. But, Montreat didn’t go down without a Cavalier fight. The Lady Cavs, playing with only eight players, gave Garder-Webb all it wanted during the first half. With nearly 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Montreat led the Lady Bulldogs 21-11, and visited the locker room trailing by only eight points. “Unfortunately, we got into foul trouble early in the game, and with only eight girls on the squad, it was tough to keep up the tempo of play that we set early in the game,” said Head Coach Craig Jackson, “Though I think we played great basketball during the first half.” With Janel Cox and Chazaree Wright fouling out, Montreat’s offense became a bit more vulnerable.
