Foul trouble leads to Lady Cav's loss to #22 Covenant College
The Lady Cavs fell last night to Covenant College, 98-85. Montreat played their typical aggressive play that Coach Craig Jackson has come to expect; however, early foul trouble gave the Lady Scot's an edge as two of Montreat's starters fouled out, and two others ended the game with four fouls. "This was a very good effort against a very good team on the road," said Coach Jackson, "obviously, our team's foul trouble made it challenging. We need to get others involved and contributing." The Cavs sent the nation's number one free throw shooting team to the line 43 times, which proved to be the deciding factor. Covenant College has been recently ranked #22 in the country; all things considered however, Montreat College played admirably against Covenant.
Led by one of the region's top players, Chazaree Wright once again hit 31 points and had 11 rebounds for the game. Wright currently leads the AAC and Region XII in rebounding, averaging 9.73 rebounds per game. With her help, Montreat currently ranks 11th in the nation in defensive rebounding. Wright has also average nearly 25 points in the last six games. Whitney Mace also had a solid night against the Lady Scots by contributing 15 points of her own. Janel Cox, who was sidelined for most of the second half due to foul trouble, still managed to score 12 points and six assists. Cox is currently ranked sixth in the nation in assist per game (6.2) and ninth nationally in free throw percentage (88%).
Montreat hung in close, trailing only by five points at the half. With just over two minutes remaining, Covenant held a six point lead, but the Lady Cav's foul trouble proved too costly. The team ends the first semester 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference. They will resume play December 14th, as they travel to Atlanta, GA, to take on Spelman College.
