Lady Cavaliers fall to NCAA D-I Gardner-Webb, 98-53
Coach Jackson’s Lady Cavaliers ran out of momentum this weekend against D-I Gardner-Webb University and lost their first game of the season 98-53. But, Montreat didn’t go down without a Cavalier fight. The Lady Cavs, playing with only eight players, gave Garder-Webb all it wanted during the first half. With nearly 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Montreat led the Lady Bulldogs 21-11, and visited the locker room trailing by only eight points. “Unfortunately, we got into foul trouble early in the game, and with only eight girls on the squad, it was tough to keep up the tempo of play that we set early in the game,” said Head Coach Craig Jackson, “Though I think we played great basketball during the first half.” With Janel Cox and Chazaree Wright fouling out, Montreat’s offense became a bit more vulnerable.
The Lady Cavs were just outnumbered as Gardner-Webb had 14 players score during the contest. The first half however demonstrated the toughness and aggressive play that Montreat will call upon in order to prepare for their AAC opponents. Leading the offense for Montreat were Janel Cox with 17 points, Whitney Mace (10 points) and Whitney Boone (9 points).
Montreat continues action against a tough UNC-Asheville team this Monday at 7:00pm. Coach Jackson and his ladies are now 1-1 on the season.
