Men's Soccer Season Comes to a Close

The Montreat College men’s soccer season came to an end over the weekend after a player was found to be ineligible due to a yellow card violation. Head coach Michael Combs’ misunderstanding of the rule meant that the Cavaliers played an ineligible player in their final four contests. Combs immediately notified the conference authorities after realizing the mistake, and those four games—including a conference tournament game—were forfeited. As a result of this finding and the forfeited games, the men’s soccer team will give up the regular season conference title and finish the year with a second place finish in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. They were also prevented from advancing in the conference tournament.

“This is a huge blow to our men’s soccer team and athletic department,” says Montreat College Athletic Director Jonathan Bennett. “Our team had a fabulous season that has come to a sudden halt. I am proud of our young men’s efforts on the field as well as the integrity of our coaching staff. It would have been easy for our coaches to brush this finding under the rug, but once they uncovered the fact that they mistakenly played an ineligible player they did the right thing by reporting it to league officials even though the consequences meant the end of their season.”
