Montreat vs. Milligan… “We’ve been waiting for this one!”

Ever since last year’s NAIA Region XII tournament, Coach Michael Combs has anticipated the Montreat vs. Milligan rematch. And rightfully so, Milligan beat the Cavaliers three times last season- once in the regular season, once in the AAC championship game, and the ultimate defeat coming in the Region XII tournament. This year’s rematch however had a much better outcome. “What a battle. I’d been waiting for this one since last year,” said Combs, “we wanted to get this monkey off our backs.” The Cavaliers did just that by defeating Milligan 1-0 in what Combs considered “a great team effort.” Behind the stellar play of AAC Defensive Player of the Week Howard Fisher, Montreat was able to make Milligan its 9th consecutive win of the season. “Howard played out of his mind. He was able to defend a scary penalty kick early in the half. He also had a few tremendous saves throughout the game… what a great shutout for him,” added Combs. “Actually, our entire defensive unit really played great… Chad, Cristian, John, and Ebrima were crucial today."

"I knew it was going to be a tight game.  We gave them a few chances too many, but I have to give Milligan all the credit.  They are a well-organized and well-coached team.  We didn’t have our ‘A’ game, but Milligan had a lot to do with that,” praised Combs.

The only goal of the match came around the 73rd minute from an overhead throw-in by Ebrima Jagne to Shaka Bangura who found fellow striker Troy Watson.  Watson who is the team’s assist leader has found more time as an offensive power as of late, earning him this week’s AAC Offensive Player of the Week.

“Again, this was a complete team effort, from the guys on the field to the guys on the bench.  We know this is how we have to play in order to win games of this caliber,” said Combs.

Montreat continues action against Greensboro College for its Homecoming game this Saturday, game time is scheduled for 3:00pm.
