Cavalier Soccer takes control of AAC standings with win over King College, 3-0

Earlier this week, Coaches Michael Combs and Josh Riccardi felt the Cavaliers needed to play their game and not just to the level of their opponents. This past Saturday, playing on the road at King College, Montreat took control of the top spot of the AAC soccer standings with a 3-0 win against a “tough and physical” Tornado team. “We are extremely proud of our men tonight. It was as tough and as physical as I thought this game would be… the guys rose above the occasion,” said Coach Combs, “King was a tough team, but after tonight we are now showing signs of a Championship caliber team, and we couldn’t be prouder of our men.”

Montreat is now on an 8 game winning streak after dropping its first two games to a couple of nationally ranked NCAA teams.  It was Stephen Jackson who helped put Montreat on the scoreboard early in the first half with his corner kick to teammate Chad Britts.  Early in the second half Troy Watson fueled his team’s momentum by earning an unassisted goal. Then, sealing the win for Montreat was Watson again by finding a faulty Tornado clear and drilling it into the left side of the net.  Howard Fisher earned a tremendous shutout with some defensive heroics as King College continued its late-game desperation attempts.

The Cavaliers continue their conference play at home this Wednesday against Milligan College, game time is 4:30pm.  The Cavs would like to challenge all Montreat fans to come out this Wednesday and support their quest for an AAC Soccer Championship!
