Troy Watson’s late penalty kick seals win for Montreat

The men’s soccer team won their 7th game in a row, but there was little celebration coming from the Montreat bench. Interim Head Coach Michael Combs took his time delivering a fervent speech to the Cavaliers after their 2-1 win over North Greenville University. With a strenuous conference schedule around the corner, the Cavalier coaching staff is now expecting a certain level of play. “NGU played up tonight,” said Assistant Coach Josh Riccardi, “they came to play. The frustrating thing for us is that we have recently played down to our competition. We probably dominated over sixty percent of possession and had 21 shots on goal… only scoring twice is not satisfactory, not with our speed and athleticism.”

The coaching staff once again praised the stellar play of the Cavalier defense; however, it only took one weak clear that allowed NGU to capitalize and score on goalie Howard Fisher.  Montreat’s scoring leader, Shaka Bangura found the back of the net around the 20th minute after Troy Watson’s pass to Kemar Brown was missed and redirected by Brown just enough for Bangura to get his accurate foot on it.

“We had 14 off-sides called tonight, which is a testament to our speed but it was 14 too many tonight,” added Riccardi, “in fact, it was Troy Watson’s speed that allowed us to get that late penalty kick which ultimately won us the game.”

Montreat takes on a tough AAC team in King College this Saturday.  The game is scheduled for 3:30pm in Bristol, TN.  There is much at stake in this AAC showdown, as King College is tied for first in the conference with Montreat College; both teams carry with them a 2-0 AAC record.
