The Lady Cavalier split a home doubleheader against Chowan University this weekend. Montreat fell in the first game 1-3, but came back with some clutch hitting in game two to win 3-2. "I was really proud of the girls in our second game," said Coach Duvall, "I felt they kept competing... Summerow was great when it mattered." It was Amber Summerow (Jr., Lenior, NC) that hit the game-winning RBI for Montreat, going 2-for-2 with a walk. In game one, it was Erin Cross (So., Morganton, NC) that had a great day at the plate, as she would go 3-for-3, including a walk. The NAIA's Region XII #3 ranked Cavaliers swept a doubleheader this past weekend from a solid Seton Hill University, a team who recently competed in the 2006 College World Series. Game one starter Patrick Ballew (Gloucester, VA) would be seeking his first victory of the season as he would try to extend the four game winning streak. Ballew would only surrender three hits while striking out six. He would pick up the victory in a tightly contested game that would stay tied until Adam Speas (Rural Hall, NC) would pinch hit in the bottom of the sixth. With a runner on third and two outs, Speas would lace a double in the right center gap for the go-ahead run and the 4-3 victory. Steven Hoyle (Cherryville, NC) would have a huge game with two homeruns, the second one coming when the Cavaliers were down by one creating a tie and leading to Spea’s heroics in the sixth. Cameron Duckworth (Asheville, NC) would continue to swing a hot bat as he would add two more hits on the day as well.

“The 2008 Montreat Volleyball schedule will be a challenging one for the Lady Cavaliers,” said Lady Cav coach Leslie Gehris, who will be beginning her 3rd season at Montreat. “As a coaching staff we feel that in order to prepare our team for competitive conference matches we have to schedule competitive non-conference matches. Preseason is what prepares our ladies for the challenges they will face when we get into the heart of AAC competition.”
Coach Gehris has prepared a schedule that will test Montreat from the get go. The season gets underway with the home opener against NAIA opponent Southern Wesleyan on Aug. 27.

Five Lady Cavaliers hit double-digits last night, as Coach Craig Jackson felt Montreat played a well-balanced game in a tough McAlister loss. North Greenville was able to pull away in the latter part of the game to win 81-73. "We have no room for errors when we play tough D-II teams. We've cut down on our turnovers [14], so I think we're taking better care of the ball, and taking better shots. Unfortunately, we couldn't defend all that well late in the game."

The men’s JV basketball program continues to struggle on the road, losing a nail-biter to Wilkes Community College (75-72), and a tough 108-75 loss to Caldwell Community College. “The Wilkes game was a tough heartbreaker. We trailed by seven at half-time and got down as many as eleven points… so it was great to see them get back into it, behind AJ’s shooting,” said Coach Robinson, “unfortunately, Wilkes grabbed the victory when our last second chance to score failed to go in.” AJ Smith led all Montreat scorers with 20 points, including two late three pointers to keep the game close. Freshman Mikie Martin added 15 points and six assists. Sophomore Matthew Pride added 13 points and nine rebounds for the night.
