Montreat sweeps Seton Hill doubleheader, 4-3 and 10-0
The NAIA's Region XII #3 ranked Cavaliers swept a doubleheader this past weekend from a solid Seton Hill University, a team who recently competed in the 2006 College World Series. Game one starter Patrick Ballew (Gloucester, VA) would be seeking his first victory of the season as he would try to extend the four game winning streak. Ballew would only surrender three hits while striking out six. He would pick up the victory in a tightly contested game that would stay tied until Adam Speas (Rural Hall, NC) would pinch hit in the bottom of the sixth. With a runner on third and two outs, Speas would lace a double in the right center gap for the go-ahead run and the 4-3 victory. Steven Hoyle (Cherryville, NC) would have a huge game with two homeruns, the second one coming when the Cavaliers were down by one creating a tie and leading to Spea’s heroics in the sixth. Cameron Duckworth (Asheville, NC) would continue to swing a hot bat as he would add two more hits on the day as well.
Game #2 Recap:
If the Cavaliers were to make it six in a row, it would fall on the shoulders of Sophomore Aaron Hughes (Murphy, NC). Hughes would pitch the third shutout of the six game span as he would go six complete with three strikeouts and only surrendering four hits. Hughes would record his first win of the season. The game would remain 1-0 into the fifth when local sophomore Dustin Bartlett (Black Mountain, NC) would lead off the inning with a single up the middle. An error and a walk would load the bases for Jesse Wise (Benson, NC). Wise would lace a single to right field to plate two and give the Cavaliers some much needed breathing room. Montreat would end up putting eight runs across in the frame. Steven Hoyle (Cherryville, NC) and Chad Dawkins (Rockinghm, NC) would continue to get on base all day as they combined for four hits and three walks.
