Andrew Bobilya- Department Co-Chair

Andrew Bobilya currently serves as co-chair of the Outdoor Education department. Andrew’s experience includes serving as a program director, trainer, and instructor at various wilderness and adventure-based programs. He often teaches courses in Administration and Management of Outdoor Education, Outdoor Living Skills, Expedition Management, Leadership and Group Dynamics and Whitewater Kayaking.  He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Association for Experiential Education (AEE) and a certifying instructor for the Wilderness Education Association (WEA). Brad Daniel- Department Co-Chair

Brad Daniel currently serves as co-chair of the Outdoor Education department. Brad’s experience includes serving as chairman of the Board for the Christian Wilderness Leadership Coalition and working with Blue Ridge Backcountry.  He teaches as a professor of Environmental Studies and is a certified instructor for a number of environmental curricula.  Check out his full profile on the Natural Sciences department page.

Dottie Shuman- Professor

Dottie is a professor of Outdoor Education at Montreat College. She has been teaching in the Outdoor Education department since 1996. She has also developed a wilderness/science program called CLIMBE (Center for Learning and Investigation in Mountain Backcountry Ecosystems) that serves middle and high school students for week-long summer programs. Before coming to Montreat, Dottie completed her Ph.D. at the University of Idaho in Environmental Education. Her Master's degree was completed at Penn State in Recreation with an environmental focus. She completed her undergraduate degree at State University College at Cortland, NY with a focus in Nature Interpretation. She has worked in the field of Outdoor and Environmental Education since the late 1970s.  Some of her previous positions have included Park Ranger in Denali National Park and the C&O Canal in Maryland;  a Forest Interpretive Ranger in the Tongass National Forest in Alaska, the Wallowa-Whitman NF, and the Hells Canyon Recreation area in Oregon and Idaho; a downhill ski instructor Colorado; and Director of Environmental Education at Camp Greenkill YMCA in NY. In her free time, she loves to spend time with her family hiking, biking, and touring.  View Dottie's full profile.

Dave Sperry- Assisstant Professor

Dave Sperry currently serves as part-time faculty member and director of the Outdoor Education's outreach program, Backcountry. Dave’s experience includes a wide variety of jobs in the organized camping and adventure education industries. He has worked at facilities in New Hampshire, New York, and North Carolina, including working with the North Carolina Outward Bound School and the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Ken Kalisch- Associate Professor

Ken Kalisch is the newest member in the Otudoor Education department. Mr. Kalisch is well known in the field of outdoor education and is widely recognized for his lifelong commitment to wilderness program ministry. Ken served for 30 years at Wheaton College as a teaching faculty in Christian Education and as a full-time program manager at the College’s HoneyRock campus in northern Wisconsin. Among the many programs he developed was the High Road Wilderness Program, the forerunner of the Discovery Wilderness Program at Montreat College. He has written a popular textbook for leadership training titled The Role of the Instructor in the Outward Bound Educational Process. Regarding his move to Montreat, Professor Kalisch said, “I have heard many good things about the strong OE progam at Montreat College. I am pleased for the opportunity to join Montreat’s faculty and a growing program that is making a big difference in the lives of young adults.” View Ken's full profile.
