CLIMBE: Environmental training for gifted teens

Visit Montreat CLIMBE's own web site

CLIMBE is an environmental training and research center operating out of the Montreat College Campus which provides young scientists with hands-on field data collection and analysis.  The program is FREE for gifted 8th-12th grade students who have an interest in science and outdoor pursuits.  Students must be residents of North Carolina.  Participants will report on basic ecological and environmental concepts at remote research stations in/around Mt. Mitchell while backpacking and living in backcountry ecosystems for one of six weeks during the summer.  The mountain watershed ecosystems of Mt. Mitchell offer unique alpine and high elevation environments in which scientific field study is needed in order to investigate the critical environmental factors threatening the air, water, and forests of this region.

Program Goals:

  • To improve student competence in science

  • To nurture student enthusiasm for science

  • To increase student interest in pursuing careers in science
