Kurt Grohman is a man of service. Recently, I had the privilege of interviewing Kurt over the telephone. In speaking with him, I felt a sense of nostalgia. Despite his young age of 38, he exuded an unassuming air like that of a World War II veteran from the “greatest generation,” reminding me of my own grandfather who served in Guam during WWII. His conversational demeanor was gracious, soft-spoken, never focused on himself, and even in his dialogue with me, I sensed that his desire was to serve me well with his thoughtful answers. Coming off their big win over #1 ranked Lindsey Wilson, Montreat got off to an unanticipated start with Asbury College. The clear favorites to win the match, Montreat gave up an early goal just five minutes in; an uncharacteristic, mistimed jump by junior goalkeeper Howard Fisher (Kingston, Jamaica) on a long range shot gave Asbury a 1-0 lead. Montreat would soon take control of the ball; however, they only managed to net two goals in over 30 shot attempts. The best thing that can come from this is know that bad games are going to occur, but good teams find a way to win. Coach Benware gave his thoughts on the game, “Our guys have played some very good soccer lately. We’ve started to gel on the field and have gained some recent confidence with a win against Lindsey Wilson, a national ranking of #16, the national defensive player of the week and offensive/defensive conference players of the week. The guys have handled these successes with humility and are simply preparing for each competition one match at a time. I’m happy to be 5-1 on the season, especially since we’ve had only one home game up to this point. I’m most happy about the depth we have on our team. We have great talent deep into our bench, and there are great benefits from that.”

After winning a hard fought conference battle with Bluefield on Tuesday, expectations were high coming into the King match last night. Some misfortune and inconsistent play turned out to be the deciding factor in the Montreat loss: 25-13, 25-23, and 25-17. A slow start hampered the Lady Cavs in game one; play picked up in games two and three, but King was overpowering up front and played pretty consistent throughout the match. Coach Mooberry commented on the teams play, “We just didn't play well as a team tonight. It's disappointing because our team is really close and enjoys playing together, but that just didn't show tonight.” The Lady Cavs will be on the road this weekend, as they head to the coast, to compete in the Francis Marion Tournament. Their next home contest will be on September 26th against Tennessee Wesleyan in a 6:30pm start.

If you were not in McAlister Gymnasium last night, you missed an electrified atmosphere for a home Lady Cavalier Volleyball match. Montreat’s Lady Cavaliers volleyball team won a hard fought battle last night against Bluefield at McAlister Gymnasium. The Lady Cavs split the first four games: winning the second and fourth, and losing the first and the third forcing a fifth and final game. In a game that is supposed to end at 15, win by two, Montreat and Bluefield took it to overtime, going past the 15 point limit. The two teams went back and forth, exchanging leads multiple times. Finally, Montreat put two successful volleys together and edged the conference foe, Bluefield, 22-20 in the fifth game. Read More

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The NAIA Men's Soccer national weekly honors have been announced and Howard Fisher of Montreat (NC.) was announced as National Defensive Player of the Week while Robert Whitnell of Shorter (Ga.) was named National Offensive Player of the Week, for the week of Sept. 8-14. Fisher, a 6-6 junior goalkeeper from Kingston, Jamaica, came up huge last week as the Cavaliers upset the No. 1 team in the country. Fisher saved all six shots on goal as Montreat defeated Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) 1-0. The shutout was Fisher’s 22nd of his career. With the win, Montreat improved to 4-1 on the year. On being selected, Fisher remarked, "First I want to thank God for blessing me with the talent to play soccer; also, with the health and strength to go forward. Without him, all of this would not be possible. It is a fabulous feeling. The hard work I have put in in the last 6 years is starting to pay dividends. However, I am still unsatisfied; I have more room to grow. I find it humbling and encouraging as well."

Kansas City, MO --- Five teams enter the Top 25 for the first time this season, including Montreat (NC). Coach Benware also commented on being nationally ranked, "I am excited about being ranked 16th; but, we are only five games into the season and have a long way to go." The next regular season Top 25 poll will be announced on Sept. 23. Read More

The Montreat College men’s soccer team traveled to Lindsey Wilson College last Saturday, September 13th to face the #1 ranked team in the nation. The Blue Raiders rose to first in the nation early in the week with their smothering defense and tenacious offense, knocking off opponents such as Park University and Lindenwood all with shutouts. Through four games, the Blue Raiders had only allowed 1 goal, and kept their opponents to a total of 11 shots on goal through four games. Montreat too had enjoyed some success going 3-1 through their first four games with two of their wins being shutouts. Though, none of their contests would compare to the 13 year old powerhouse that is Lindsey Wilson College, who has won seven National Championships during that span. Read More

Montreat women’s soccer team fell to Cumberland University last Saturday. Two early first half goals were the deciding factors in Cumberlands victory over Montreat. The Lady Cavaliers played hard but in the end did not have an answer for the Cumberland attack.Coach Maples commented on the game saying, “The same bug keeps biting us. We are giving up soft goals early in a game and never get a chance to get our flow before we are behind. For the first four minutes we had the ball in their half. They get a counter attack, we get back and the only time they get across the half line, they end up with a goal. It takes the wind out of us and we have to regroup. You can see it took the energy out of us because we didn’t start getting shots until later in the first half. We changed some personnel in important spots with 23 minutes left in the first half and our energy picked up. From there the game was ours. CU only got six shots the rest of the game and only one in the second half. Read More

The Montreat Cavaliers volleyball team traveled this weekend for conference play, first at Covenant College on Friday and then at Bryan College on Saturday. Both matches ended after three games, as Montreat could not get the momentum swung in their direction. Coach Mooberry on the Covenant match, "We really struggled as a team passing tonight against Covenant, which made it hard to run an effective offense. Covenant has a good program, some strong hitters and quick defense. We needed to play well tonight to beat Covenant, but our intensity and communication was also not what it needed to be. My hope is that we will be able to step up our game when they come visit us at Montreat and play with the intensity, communication, and solid skills to beat them." Read More

That practice served Danial well - during his career he earned offensive player of the year and all conference honors; was named to all-tournament teams in the Western Highland Conference, Colvard Oil Holiday Tournament, and Unimin Harvest Hoops Tournament; and he set the record for free-throw percentage at Mitchell High School in 2007 at 89 percent before breaking it in the 2007-08 season by shooting with 95 percent accuracy. Montreat women's basketball Coach Craig Jackson has made a statement this season. With only half the team as most other AAC rosters, Jackson has led his team to a 12-15, and 5-10 conference record, which is a great improvement from recent years- though he contends this is only the beginning. He is well on his way to filling his roster with the talent he believes will take the Lady Cavaliers to the top of the conference. With that goal in mind, Coach Jackson has recently announced the signing of two star players for next year's team; Caitlyn Chambers, a 5-8 senior star from Greenville Tech Charter High School, will be joining her future Lady Cavalier teammate Alicia Wallace, a 6-2 star center from North Surry High School, as Montreat's newest additions. Jackson believes both young ladies will have an immediate impact on the team and in the conference. Read More

Coach Katie Duvall liked the fight in her Lady Cavs in game one, when they defeated Limestone College 5-4 in game one of the doubleheader. "I was really proud of their effort, their fight," said Duvall. "The girls really wanted to get their first win, so I was proud of that." In game two, however, Limestone managed to shut out Montreat, 7-0. "After game one, it was very disappointing to see a lack of leadership on the field," added Duvall. "We just didn't want it as much as we did during game one." The Lady Cavs are now 1-11, and play host to Walter State Community College this Tuesday, February 19th. Read More

Recap of the Lee University doubleheader: The Cavalier's first game saw Patrick Ballew (Gloucester, VA) take the mound against a very good Lee University team that would be ranked fifth in the country. Ballew would have a short stint as he was pulled after three innings. Montreat would struggle offensively as they could muster only six hits and produce no runs. Brent Ashbaugh (Tara, Ontario) would go 2 for 3 in the game. Game two starter Garrett Jones (Elwood, IN) would pitch well but would get no offensive support either as the only run produced would be a first inning homerun by Jesse Wise (Benson, NC). The final scores of the doubleheader were 0-4 and 1-10. Read More

Myrtle Beach, SC- With nearly perfect running conditions and high hopes, Montreat’s track team made school history by qualifying three track members for the NAIA National Track & Field Championships to be held in St. Louis, MO, on May 22-24th. Ben Hall, Talisa Bishop, and Arilicia Adkins earned the right to compete at this year’s marathon championship event by hitting the NAIA’s “A” and “B” qualifying standards. “This was a great day for our program. All of our team has been working so hard… it’s always nice for them to see the fruit of their labor,” said Head Coach Jose Larios. The small team chose the 2008 Myrtle Beach Half Marathon as their targeted race due to its fast and flat 13.1 mile course, and its traditionally great running weather. Out of nearly 3,000 runners, Ben Hall (Fr.,Columbus, NC/ Polk County High) finished fourth overall in a spectacular time of 1:16:07; his time, which averages out to 5:49.9 seconds per mile, is an NAIA “B” qualifying standard. “This was awesome for Ben… he barely missed the qualifying mark in December, so I was really happy for him today,” added Larios. "It was tiring," said freshman distance runner Elyse Gildernew (Lookout Mt, GA), "but I enjoyed being a part of a project like this. Knowing that a deserving family will benefit from our work. With star player Chazaree Wright out with a leg injury, Coach Jackson's Lady Cavaliers fell to one of the top AAC teams last night in Covenant College, 67-79. "It's really tough when you lose your top scorer who's also our top rebounder," said Jackson, "we have to continue to find ways to make up for that. We have to rely on the bench and the other players to step up. I felt we did some good things there down the stretch, cutting the lead to just one a couple of times. All in all, we played a pretty solid game against them." Picking up some of the scoring responsibility was Sophomore forward Whitney Boone (Bakersville, NC), as she dished in 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Boone was 7-for-16 for the night, with 2-of-5 from 3-point land. Another Sophomore, Kera Bryant (Jacksonville, FL), stepped up her offensive contributions by adding 12 points and six rebounds for the Lady Cavs. Bryant was 6-of-10 from the floor. Read More

Yesterday, Friday February 1st, at the Black Mountain Campus the track team had one of its best performances of the year, though it had little to do with racing. The Cavalier track team presented Adam Ripley and his Least-of-These Ministry a check for $500 to be used to purchase much needed food. “This couldn’t have come at a better time. We had a great chapel presentation today centered on compassion,” said Coach Larios, “and so as a team, to provide this small gift to Adam [an ex-Cavalier cross country runner] and his compassionate ministry is very special.” Freshman leader Ben Hall prayed over the presentation asking God to bless the money so that many of Asheville’s homeless could somehow hear the Gospel through Adam’s ministry. Least-of-These is a non-profit organization that was created by Adam and some Montreat students to provide a warm breakfast for the homeless in Asheville. The Cavaliers held on to a single digit lead going into the final minutes of the game, though it proved to not be enough, as Union's Aaron Dunaway delivered the final 3-point blow with less than 10 seconds remaining. "It was a heartbreaking loss," said Coach Bill Robinson, "we were just one stop away from winning a big game on the road. I thought our small lead there at the end would be enough, but again, we didn't get one of those important stops when we needed to." Montreat is now 9-13 and 6-5 in the AAC. Though both teams didn't have their best night of shooting percentage, King College edged Montreat out 40% to 37%. Montreat was only 6-for-11 from the stripe, while King College shot 81% (17-for-21). MONTREAT — Basketball had not been a lot of fun for Craig Jackson or the Montreat women’s team in recent years. Formerly a Division I coach at University of the Pacific, Jackson endured a 5-22 record his last complete season there and resigned after a 1-5 start in 2005-06. Meanwhile, the Montreat women have finished next-to-last in the Appalachian Athletic Conference for four straight years while averaging five wins per season. But after their first month together, Jackson and the Cavaliers look like a nice combination. They went into Tuesday’s game needing one win to tie last season’s victory total, and they’ve been competitive in two league losses. “We’re all just really excited,” sophomore Janel Cox said. “Coach tells us to trust him and good things will happen. ... Our offense is more structured, and so is our defense. We work well in his system, too.” Junior Whitney Mace, in her third season at Montreat, said: “Coach Jackson knows the game really well. We have set plays, and he makes sure we know what we’re doing. It makes the game fun.” Read More

With nearly 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Montreat led the Lady Bulldogs 21-11, and visited the locker room trailing by only eight points. “Unfortunately, we got into foul trouble early in the game, and with only eight girls on the squad, it was tough to keep up the tempo of play that we set early in the game,” said Head Coach Craig Jackson, “Though I think we played great basketball during the first half.” With Janel Cox and Chazaree Wright fouling out, Montreat’s offense became a bit more vulnerable. The 2007 Volleyball season has come to a close at this weekend’s AAC Tournament. The Lady Cavs lost to Bryan College in three straight games, 25-30, 11-30, and 25-30. “It’s disappointing to lose like this,” said Coach Gehris, “but our girls have never played this well against Bryan, so it was positive to see them play as well as they did. We wish our seniors well and we’ll miss them dearly. Now, it’s time to look to the future. It’s time to focus on our preseason and our recruiting. We have some great returners, and we will look to add some more solid student-athletes to better our program.” And better it will be- with solid returners like two-time NAIA Region Player of the Week Allison Baumgartner- the future is very bright. Baumgartner led all Lady Cavaliers offensively with 11 kills and five service aces. Read More
