Course Description
OE 182: Wilderness Journey Practicum--Students participate in a trip to a natural area of the world where they are involved in integrated experiences of adventure and environmental education. This course focuses on individual and group development in four core areas: stewardship, discipleship, community and leadership. Through this experience, students are encouraged to work together, develop an attitude of service, and gain an appreciation for the natural environment. Special emphasis is placed on spiritual growth and Christian fellowship. A reflective paper will be required at the conclusion. (2 credit hours)
Notes
1) Limited enrollment. Apply early. Deadline: October 24, 2008 - $595.00 due. Remainder billed later.
2) No extra tuition costs for Montreat students unless over 18 hrs. / $1595.00 Lab Fee + airfare to TX.
3) No prerequisites or previous experience needed to participate. Non-Montreat students are welcome!
4) This course counts for 1 credit toward Montreat College’s physical education requirement.
5) Important course requirements:
a. Special Application, Special Course Agreement, Acknowledgement of Risk, etc. is required.
b. Average physical condition w/ no limiting medical illnesses or injuries. Good swim skills.
c. Sincere commitment the course objectives for three weeks with a willingness to daily embrace challenging tasks, social interactions, and personal reflection.
d. To be free of ALL tobacco, drug, and alcohol consumption from start to finish.
e. Students make their own travel arrangements from home to Midland, TX and back to college.
Course Objectives
1. Spiritual Growth: To cultivate a personal relationship with God, gain a deeper appreciation of God's loving involvement in human affairs, and better understand the role of solitude & silence in fostering growth.
2. Interpersonal Effectiveness: To demonstrate a greater ability to develop positive, trusting relationships with others and practice servanthood in day-to-day interactions.
3. Self Understanding: To develop a more realistic and appropriate definition of self as a follower of Christ, as a unique member of the Body of Christ, and as a leader of others.
4. Environmental Appreciation: To gain a greater appreciation and responsibility for the natural environment as God's creation.
5. Outdoor Skill Competence: To demonstrate an increased proficiency in wilderness skills and safe expeditionary travel in a desert environment.
6. Leadership Experience: To better understand principles of small group leadership and be better able to make decisions that facilitate task accomplishment and relational commitment.
Course Site
This year’s adventurous trip will take place in wilderness areas within and surrounding Big Bend National Park .This 800,000 acre desert wilderness park is located in southern Texas along the Mexican border. It is known for its rich geological diversity, panoramic views, variety of bird and plant species, and for the scenic Rio Grande River. The group will first backpack for several days across a rugged portion of the Chihuahuan Desert. This will then be followed by a challenging canoe journey through the awe-inspiring canyons of the Rio Grande.
Course Schedule
Nov. Selected WJP group meets for trip preparation 1-2 times. Non-Montreat students are contacted.
12/27 Students fly to Midland, TX International Airport (MAF) in AM & drive to Big Bend NP in PM.
12/28 On site orientation. Pack out. Backpack to 1st campsite.
12/29 Begin desert backpacking.
1/3 Begin canoeing the Rio Grande.
1/15 Canoe to take out / Clean up / Trip debrief.
1/16 Return to Midland Airport (4 hrs.). Fly in PM back home or to school dorm.
1/20 Returning student arrival on Montreat campus.
1/21 Montreat’s 2nd semester classes begin – 8AM / Written paper for this course is due.
