Meet Coach McMinn!

One of the exciting new developments here at Montreat College is the launch of both men’s and women’s lacrosse teams this fall! Joining us from the sunny state of California to head up the program is Coach Will McMinn; I was delighted to chat with Coach Mc. earlier this week about lacrosse, his journey to Montreat College and his hopes for the newborn program. Check out what he has to say below!

Q: What is your history with the game of lacrosse?

A: I started playing lacrosse when I was about 15 years old. I played through High School at a school called St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco, and then through college at UC Santa Barbara. After school, I played post-collegiate club lacrosse until my mid 40’s, in Orange County, CA. When I graduated college and originally moved to the OC, I had the itch to coach, but there was no presence of lacrosse down there – so I ended up starting a league with a buddy of mine; we roped a bunch of my teammates from our men’s club to be other coaches and refs., and long story short, I have been coaching lacrosse – and starting lacrosse programs ever since – for about 30 years now.

Q: How did you hear about Montreat College?

A: I found Montreat College through the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and instantly fell in love with the mission behind this school and the people in it – faculty, staff, and students. It fits who I am as a coach, and as a minister to young people.  To me it is all about the people you are working with; the importance of the work the organization is doing, and an environment that is all about growth (personal, professional, spiritual – all of it) and service.  I am honored to be serving here, and am excited about the great things I believe God is going to do at this college.

Q: What is your goal for lacrosse, here at Montreat?

A: My goal is to add value to the mission here at Montreat, and to impact as many lives for Christ as I possibly can.  Lacrosse is the oldest American sport – it was here before the Europeans arrived. The Native Americans who played it – and still do – call it “the Creators’ Game.” Because of the spiritual foundations of lacrosse, it, like all sports, really provides a fertile framework for ministry to happen.  The goal here is to create a program that attracts great kids (oops – I mean student-athletes), give them an environment, system, and structure that fosters both growth and excellence; and then provide the catalyst, as a coach, for young men and women to push their boundaries, grow, and reach their potential as athletes and members of a team. We are going to work hard and have some fun.  I would like lacrosse to bring some positive attention to Montreat by both the success of the program and the character of the teams, both on and off the field.  I would like to be competitive within three years or so with some of the NCAA D2 teams in the area.  That level of play would put us in a position in three or four years to compete for a national championship.  It seems to me that the whole athletic program here is on its way up, with some great coaches and real moves towards improving facilities, etc.  I believe there are great things ahead for Montreat athletics.

We are excited to have Coach McMinn as a part of our Montreat family. If you see him around campus, be sure to say hello!
